Wangaratta Gallery

Wangaratta Gallery

Wangaratta exhibitions Gallery presents a relevant, diverse and changing visual arts program, consisting of national, state and regional exhibitions; including local artists, touring exhibitions and joint ventures with the public galleries sector in Victoria and elsewhere.  Each exhibition runs for approximately one month, with over 14 distinct exhibitions held throughout the year.

Established in 1987 Wangaratta's unique regional art gallery is housed in a heritage building located in the arts precinct, a short walk from the CBD. The spacious interior offers a distinctive and rare experience for the gallery visitor.

The Gallery’s permanent art collection focuses on textiles, small sculpture, wood, and significant works of art from, and about, the north east region of Victoria.  Recent acquisitions include works by Stephen Anderson, Robert Hirschmann, Louise Saxton, Mandy Gunn and Kim Westcott.

The Gallery has recently been bestowed the honour and status of becoming a recipient institution of the Federal Government’s Cultural Gifts Program, and therefore encourages significant donations of art from the public. Donated and bequeathed works of art must meet the Gallery’s permanent collection policy criteria and be approved by the Cultural Gifts Program committee and the Gallery Acquisitions Committee.

The Wangaratta exhibitions Gallery offers a comprehensive range of public programs with each exhibition.  Regular events at the Gallery include exhibition openings, wine & cheese nights, exhibition coffee mornings, artist floor talks, lectures, workshops, performances and forums.

The Gallery provides a complementary education program for north east Victoria regional schools and tertiary institutions.  Aligned with each exhibition are talks, activities and mini-workshops developed for all year levels to suit both the standard school curriculum and individual class needs.

In addition the Wangaratta exhibitions Gallery provides outreach programs into neighbouring municipalities such as Alpine Shire, Indigo Shire and the Rural City of Benalla.

2005 saw the refurbishment of the historic Workshop Hall at the rear of the main Gallery building.  This adaptable, multi-purpose facility has been renamed The Gallery Workshop Space, and is now available for hire to artists, schools and community arts groups for arts and cultural related activity such as workshops, performances and other programs. The Gallery also installs in-house curated exhibitions in this space.

The Gallery has recently instituted a major biennial Contemporary Textile Award which was launched in June 2009. This initiative is to support contemporary textile art practice nationally and internationally whilst assisting to build the Gallery’s textile collection holdings and consolidate the Gallery’s focus on contemporary textile art.
